The Zero Carbon Hub is a non-profit company limited by guarantee. The Zero Carbon Hub has been a central player in the debate on how zero carbon should be defined, and has been committed to help usher in a practical and realistic definition.
It is a public/private partnership established to take day-to-day operational responsibility for co-ordinating delivery of low and zero carbon new homes. The Callcutt Review of House-building Delivery identified the need for this new venture and more than 25 organisations were consulted before the Zero Carbon Hub was launched on 28 June 2008.
Hub activity has been organised in five workstreams; Building energy efficiency, Energy supply, Examples and scale up, Skills and training and Consumer engagement. Each is managed by a Steering Group and supported by a range of key stakeholders from across the industry. Each Steering Group prioritises specific delivery programmes focused on industry need.
The Zero Carbon Hub supports and reports to the 2016 Task Force. Its purposes are to:
- develop and drive a programme for the energy efficiency aspects of low carbon homes leading to the delivery of mainstream zero carbon homes from 2016
- develop and drive a programme for the energy aspects of delivering low and zero carbon homes
- capture practical experience and use this to accelerate mainstream adoption of low and zero carbon methods and technologies
- ascertain the current level of knowledge within the industry to build to low and zero carbon home standards and determine where additional skills and training are required
- help raise consumer awareness and generate demand for low and zero carbon homes
